Wannamaker Genealogy

exploring the connections between Wannamaker, Wanamaker, Wannemacher, and Wannenmacher family groups through Y-DNA testing (BigY-700)

Y-DNA Findings – January 2020

In brief, a SNP presents a mutation which occurs about every 144 years in the direct paternal line of descent. We get this information from Y-DNA testing, and these particular SNP values are based upon BigY-700 test results at Family Tree DNA (FTDNA). Having this information allows us to follow a migratory path for a direct paternal line. We can refer to this line as a SNP Path.

As of October 2019, we now know the entire SNP Path for one direct male Wannemacher line down into “modern times” in South Carolina. At present, the SNP Path in these images are only extended into Europe.

The entire SNP Path, starting in Africa, to R-S1480 is:

A0-T > A1 > A1b > BT > CT > CF > F > GHIJK > HIJK > IJK > K > K2 > K2b > P > P1 > P-P337 > P-P226 > R > R-Y482 > R1 > R1b > R-L754 > R-L389 > R-P297 > R-M269 > R-L23 > R-L51 > R-L52 >  R-L151 > R-P312 > R-U152 > R-L2 > R-Z49 > R-Z142 > R-L562 > R-Z57 > R-S1491 > R-S1480

You can research these individual SNPs, but Scaled Innovation has offered an easier way to learn more about these SNPs and each step of the way. It’s worth a look.

These SNP Path images were generated by Scaled Innovation. This company has created a relatively new tool, SNP Tracker, for the genetic genealogy community, and it is incredibly useful in many ways. If interested, review the site for additional information. I find the History tab especially interesting. Look at that and then view the time-lapse video (Show-“Man” icon) to see how the males in your direct line of descent migrated through history…… Note: Scaled Innovation is constantly improving the SNP Tracker tool and incorporating new data all of the time. You may see information that you believe to be incorrect or incomplete, but just wait for the next update.

Please know that I, along with other Wannemacher collaborators, are always looking for qualified males in the Wannemacher family, across the globe, who would be willing to take a BigY-700 test. We need additional testers to help refine the results and to answer more questions about our shared Wannemacher ancestry.

Following Bill Wood’s advice and his “Rule of Three” strategy, we were able to name all of the SNPs in my father’s direct line. This helps with the age estimation of SNPs for our family’s line and for lines of other testers. In turn, these pieces of scientific tidbits provide more DNA evidence for genealogical research which is useful particularly when no paper trail exists.

I highly recommend joining Bill Wood’s Facebook Group if you would like to gain in-depth knowledge of BigY testing and what’s involved. His lists of files, resources, etc., are comprehensive. They are very helpful as are the moderators of the group. You may also be interested in reading a summary about the benefits of BigY testing and how many more men have tested recently. As Roberta Estes says, “2019 was a Banner Year” for Y-DNA testing.
