Wannamaker Genealogy

exploring the connections between Wannamaker, Wanamaker, Wannemacher, and Wannenmacher family groups through Y-DNA testing (BigY-700)

Haplogroup R-S1480

In brief, Y-DNA results include the testing and analysis of both STR and SNP mutations that have occurred on the Y-chromosome (men only). STR results indicate who is a genetic relative or match, and SNP results help us to determine how closely related our Y-DNA matches are to one another. SNP results confirm our haplogroups, provide information about the deeper ancestry of the Y-line, and help to define surnames.

For the Wannamaker Y-DNA testers our haplogroup is R-S1480:

  1. The “R” represents the haplogroup, R1b. Haplogroups, in general, represent the many different migratory patterns of different groups of men who traveled out of Africa thousands of years ago. The men in these groups have similar mutations which have changed over the course of time, making it possible to identify and assign haplogroups to these different groups. For men with the haplogroup R1b, there is, at least, a common ancestor (male) who lived about 17,000 B.C. The R1b designation will remain the same for them.
  1. “S1480” is our current “terminal SNP” and it indicates the placement of these Wannamaker Y-DNA testers on the haplotree of mankind. S1480 is a relatively new branch and it formed about 3,200 years ago. More information is needed, but I can say that these Wannamaker ancestors descended from Alpine and Germanic peoples which was to be expected.

As we continue to participate in and learn more through additional advanced SNP testing, the designation, S1480, will change and we will have a new “terminal SNP.” The goal is to refine these results, bringing them into a more recent genealogical time frame within the last two hundred years. Hopefully, one day, we will be able to discover the unique SNPs that define our individual Wannamaker family groups.
